The First Night
The first night home with your new puppy will require some special considerations. You will need to get a crate, make it comfortable by stuffing a pet bed or soft material into it and keep your pet in the same room with you that night. You can leave on a night light or put on some soft music in order to soothe your puppy. It is a given that your puppy is going to cry on the first night home. Provide some comfort but try not to coddle your pet too much even though it might be tempting, in the long run it will help your dog to be more independent and well trained.
Limit Visits
While you may want to show everyone your new puppy, it is best to limit visitors on the first day you take your pet home. You want to get your puppy to trust you and to be comfortable, overwhelming them with too much attention can have a negative impact on your pet in the beginning. Limit the visitors for at least two days so your puppy can get settled in.
Teach Good Manners Early
There are certain puppy behaviors that are considered cute, such as licking your fingers or jumping on your lap. However, as your coton puppy turns into an adult dog these behaviors will no longer be cute but by then it will be difficult to erase these behaviors, so even though it may be difficult to be strict on your cute little puppy it is necessary for proper training.
Puppy Proof Your House
You should install a baby gate in areas that you do not want your new coton puppy to wander into. Put away important items before you bring home your puppy, you should also make sure to get power cords, medications or poisonous plants out of the way. Puppies love to chew so stocks up on chew toys in order to prevent your pup from chewing on your valuables.
Your new puppy is sure to settle in quickly once you make adequate preparation for their arrival. It is also important that you exercise patience, since sometimes settling in may take longer than you expected.
